Description

This piece was composed in 1982 specifically for inclusion in Music and Playing Techniques of the 20th Century, edited by Dieter Hähnchen. It is also included in his Zeitgenössische Musik für Fagott solo. While not as technically challenging as some of the other music in this collection, it nonetheless requires agility and familiarity with asymmetrical and erratic atonal gestures over the full range up to D5, as well as with numerous extended techniques. Tongue-slaps, pitch bending, air sounds, flutter-tonguing, quarter-tones, multiphonics, wide tremolos, harmonics, and humming are all included in this composition, as is an optional improvisation section. Suggested fingerings for many of the extended techniques and are provided, taken from Bruno Bartolozzi’s seminal book New Sounds for Woodwind (London: Oxford University Press, 1967) and/or Sergio Penazzi’s Metodo per Fagotto (Milan: Ricordi. 1972), but these are not always reliable. Be prepared to experiment.
