Description
This is a very plaintive and evocative piece, based on the composer’s recollection of a Native American song, that was first created in1985 for Alexandre Ouzounoff, and then revised in 1994 for Pascal Gallois to be more accessible on the Heckel system bassoon. The music is very lyrical and somewhat pitch-centric, and spans the full range up to D5. Some extended techniques (timbre changes, glissandi, flutter-tonguing, multiphonics, quarter-tones, and tongue-slaps) are called for. Suggested fingerings are provided for the multiphonics, but not for the quarter-tones. This challenging piece was included in the annual Paris Conservatory Concours of 1997.
