Description
This moderately challenging atonal piece was composed in 1973 and includes extended techniques (multiphonics, pitch indeterminacy, singing, pitch-bending, and a single glissando). The first movement allows the performer to group a succession of pitches, rhythmically and dynamically as deemed appropriate, while always maintaining the order of succession. The second movement allows the performer to combine a series of multiphonics and short melodic fragments in any manner. Either of two third movements may be performed. The first is a sung improvisation on a theme and the other, to be played, contains more rigorously controlled material. The finale consists of a series of pitches to be played as fast as possible, but with any desired legato articulations or emphases. Proportional, box, and graphic notation are all used in this piece.
