Description

This piece was composed in 1973 and dedicated to Hans Samuelsson, who gave the premiere in Stockholm on October 24 of that year. Sandström is known for writing very challenging pieces, and this one is no exception. The music is atonal and composed in three strata over three staves. The upper register (up to E5) is very soft and slow, with some quarter-tones. The middle register also features quarter-tones, with music that is a bit louder and faster. The lowest register is loud and fast, and includes flutter- tonguing since quarter-tones are not always practical in this register. Each line is developed independently, often with very complex rhythms, causing the player to make often very rapid shifts of register, tempo, dynamics, and character. No fingerings are provided for the quarter-tones, and no other extended techniques are called for.
