Description

This piece is contained in a collection of Works by Soviet Composers for Solo Bassoon, Installment I, compiled by Valery Popov, and was at one time published by Andel of Belguim. This is the first of many pieces for bassoon by Levitt, and in some ways it is the most ambitious. The music is pitch-centric and cyclic, with the opening motive used in various ways in each movement. It is thematic in movements I and IV, used as an accompanying figure in the polyphonic second movement (written across two staves), and is used melodically but rhythmically altered in III. This is a challenging piece, with technical agility required throughout the range to E5.
