Description

This atonal piece was composed in 1980, and is included two anthologies; Music and Playing Techniques of the 20th Century and Zeitgenössische Musik für Fagott solo, both edited by Dieter Hähnchen. Extended techniques are employed. The erratic first movement uses tremolo, vibrato manipulations, multiphonics, tongue-slaps, pitch bending, and air sounds, all while the player is making decisions regarding the architecture of the piece. The performer is frequently asked to choose between two or three of 70 musical “events” while progressing through the music. The more lyrical second movement also has elements of choice, and the third movement is a rather agitated scherzo. The full range up to C#5 is employed and, while moderately challenging, the demands in this piece are more interpretational than technical. Suggested fingerings for many of the extended techniques and are provided, taken from Bruno Bartolozzi’s seminal book New Sounds for Woodwind (London: Oxford University Press, 1967) and/or Sergio Penazzi’s Metodo per Fagotto (Milan: Ricordi. 1972), but these are not always reliable. Be prepared to experiment.
