Description

Composed in 1977 and dedicated to Valeri Popov, this piece was first published in 1982. It is included in a New Russian Music anthology along with unaccompanied compositions by Firsova and Schut, and also in two anthologies edited by Dieter Hähnchen: Music and Playing Techniques of the 20th Century and Zeitgenössische Musik für Fagott solo, both also published by Deutscher Verlag. This rhapsodic but challenging piece sounds improvised, but is carefully notated. The high register, up to E4, is used extensively, as are flutter tonguing, timbral trills, glissandi, quarter tones, multiphonics, and multiphonic tremolos. Suggested fingerings for many of the extended techniques and are provided, taken from Bruno Bartolozzi's seminal book New Sounds for Woodwind (London: Oxford University Press, 1967) and/or Sergio Penazzi's Metodo per Fagotto (Milan: Ricordi. 1972), but these are not always reliable. Be prepared to experiment.
