As the title states, this is a collection of contemporary music (at least through 1986, when it was published) for bassoon. Most of the works require extended techniques based on Bruno Bartolozzi’s seminal book, New Sounds for Woodwind (London: Oxford University Press, 1967) and/or Sergio Penazzi’s Metodo per Fagotto (Milan: Ricordi. 1972). The fingerings presented in these books are not always reliable, so a prospective performer must be prepared to experiment. Many of these pieces are also included in Hähnchen’s Musik und Spieltechniken des 20. Jahrhunderts from the same publisher.
