Fantasy for Bassoon, Op. 86. London: Faber, 1966
Duration

Description
This challenging piece was composed in 1965 for the Birmingham International Wind Competition of May 1966, on commission from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Two themes, one jaunty and the other wistfully lyrical, are used to create a loose ABAC structure with a coda. Though the range is not extreme for a competition piece (ascending only to Bb4), the numerous rapid 7th-chord arpeggios require considerably facility. It was a required piece for the 1990 Gillet Competition sponsored by the IDRS.
