Description

This piece was composed in 1982 and first performed by Kim Walker. It was adapted from the clarinet version of 1977. The music includes some extended techniques (choreography, key-slaps, pitch-bending, vibrato manipulations, flutter- tonguing, and tremolos), and is atonal and dispersed over three strata. The upper layer is soft while the lowest is loud; motivically they are reflections of each other in the mirror created by the middle layer, which consists of the pitches F#3 and G3. The outer layers converge on each other and eventually unite with the central mirror. The three strata are to be indicated with body movements as well. This work is very challenging, requiring a facile technique up to C5 as well as control of body movement. It is to be memorized, which is in itself a considerable accomplishment, and ideally should be performed while wearing a teddy bear suit. This piece was included in the annual Paris Conservatory Concours of both 1989 and 2004.
