Description
This piece was composed in Berlin in 1976, and dedicated to Matti Tassavainen. Serial techniques are employed, but with some triadic structures in the row providing a pitch-centric framework. The second movement makes considerable use of tongue slaps, both with and without the reed, and the third movement requires multiphonics. Both fingerings and the desired prominent pitches are provided, so if the former do not work the performer has a guide to approximate the composer’s intentions. No other extended techniques are employed. The music is challenging and requires considerable expressive resources over the full range to E5.
