Work

Sonata for Solo Bassoon. Paris: Leduc. 15 minutes.

I   Moderato
II  Lento, poco rubato
III Allegro moderato

Duration

15 minutes

Description

The music is loosely pitch-centric (although the outer movements use serial techniques) and highly motivic, with a half-step/whole-step contrary motion motive featured very prominently. The full range is used; the second movement in particular, notated entirely in the treble clef, is very high throughout, even up to F5. The final movement is polyphonic. Given its length and tessitura, this piece is a very challenging workout.
