Description
This challenging piece was composed in 1975, and dedicated to Christopher Weait. It requires a fluid technical facility up to Eb5 and great endurance. The movements are marginally pitch centric. The first movement is a set of continuous variations on a lyrical theme, some of which are quite florid. The second movement is a scherzo with trio, while the third is suggestive of a da capo aria with a greatly ornamented return. The finale loosely adheres to a sonata form. There are cyclic elements; some whole-tone derived motives are present in every movement.
